County Heat Treat: Applying the Heat Since 1967

County Heat Treat, located in Millbury, Massachusetts, was founded in 1967 and remains true to its roots as a family-owned and operated business in its second-generation of – as the name aptly suggests – a heat treat services provider. Currently owned and operated by Bill Nartowt, County Heat Treat is a company that strives to meet the needs of its customers that exist throughout New England. Whether it’s simple stress relief of a low carbon steel weldment or the exacting specifications of a helicopter drive shaft, County Heat Treat have “been there and done that,” and are capable of meeting any of your prospective thermal processing needs.

As alluded to above, the primary mission of County Heat Treat, as it relates to you, its customers, is to offer flawless service, quick delivery, and ease of mind (or any heat treat pain, as it were). They’ve long sought (for over five decades!) to provide work in such a professional manner that customers will come back again and again, and, on the flipside, new clients will arise due to the word of mouth successes they’ve provided their existing pool of clientele.

Let’s get into some further details on County Heat Treat’s operative capabilities:

Aluminum Treating – County Heat Treat’s aluminum treating department consists of four furnaces. Three are capable of solution treating and aging and one is solely for aging. Dimensions and heating capabilities for the solution and aging furnaces are as follows:

    • 60″ x 60″ x 60″ 1100 degrees F maximum
    • 64″ x 120″ x 62″ 1050 degrees F maximum
    • 72″ x 102″ x 80″ 1450 degrees F maximum

Aging Furnace – Of note: County Heat Treat offers the choice of air blasting or water quenching and have full straightening capabilities. Furnace dimensions:

    • 52″ X 72″ X 80″ 550 degrees F maximum

Shrink Fitting – The process of fitting a piece into a hole that is smaller than the piece itself. This is done by cooling the insert in liquid nitrogen, causing it to shrink slightly, and heating the other piece, causing it to expand. The parts are then assembled. When the assembled parts reach room temperature, they will be fit together.

Vacuum Hardening – County Heat Treat has four vacuum furnaces used for hardening tool steels, stainless steels, brazing and solution annealing. Their vacuum furnace capacity is able to meet the most demanding needs.

Straightening – Unfortunately, distortion is an unavoidable product of heat treating. This may be caused by any number of factors:

    • Choice of steel relevant to the heat treatment required
    • Severity of machining
    • Defects in steel

Depending on each individual’s job requirements, County Heat Treat’s internal Straightening Department uses hot and cold straightening, peen hammering, or spot straightening to bring the product within precise finishing tolerance demands.

Nitriding – Operator’s load a plastic injection molding screw to be nitrided into one of County Heat Treat’s two nitriding furnaces. These nitriding furnaces are able to process parts up to 115 inches long and 38 inches in diameter, including stainless steel.

Neutral Hardening – Neutral hardening and gas carburizing of large pieces up to 60 inches long and 40 inches in diameter is offered. Material being treated is transferred from their internal atmosphere pit furnace to an oil quench bath.

Flame Hardening – Flame hardening is a long-used effective form of localized hardening. Fast and efficient, this method requires an experienced eye to run the job. County Heat Treat has over 100 years of combined experience to ensure maximum quality and customer satisfaction.

Inspection Department – At County Heat Treat, they are able to perform Rockwell and Brinell hardness testing, as well as micro hardness testing.

Brazing – In County Heat Treat’s fleet of four vacuum furnaces, they’re able to vacuum braze using copper or nickel compounds.

Cleaning (The Finishing Touch) – When desired, abrasive cleaning is performed in a variety of ways. Heavy-duty scale and discoloration are removed through sandblasting on a 72″ table blaster. Large volumes of small parts are tumble sandblasted. Other methods of cleaning include glass beading and aluminum oxide in sandblast cabinets.

    Industries/Verticals Served:

County Heat Treat serve a wide variety of industries which include (but are in no way limited to):

    • Aerospace
    • Aviation
    • Medical
    • Plastics
    • Power generation
    • Tool and die
    • Defense
    • Screw machine
    • Food industry

Another industry they’re seeking to expand operations in is the centerless grinding industry as they have the capability to run 12-foot long precipitation hardening grades of stainless steel – something County Heat Treat is looking to spread the word about.

    Quality is Key:

County Heat Treat has developed and implemented a quality management system, which uses ISO 9001:2015 as a framework. This allows the organization to document and improve operative practices to help better satisfy the needs and expectations of customers and interested parties. The internal quality system addresses and supports strategies for the supply and demand of heat treating services. County Heat Treat recognizes the importance of knowing the needs and expectations of their customers through pricing, reliability and value, while fully understanding the needs of their team of employees through security and shared values.

It’s important to the business that they communicate their mission, vision, and strategy to their team in order to encourage commitment to quality which trickles into the work being done. Customer needs are paramount and represent the highest priority within the business. County Heat Treat’s obligation is to proactively seek out and define customer needs beginning with a clear understanding of customer expectations; striving to consistently meet or exceed them. The end goal is to adhere to customer-specific requirements and provide processes that ensure we achieve these requirements in order to build a robust, world-class business.

County Heat Treat is proud to employ such a solid, well-seasoned team, with many years of heat treating experience. Their background has been built not only through textbook learning but also, and more importantly, by on-the-job training and experience. This hands-on approach has lent itself to the development of critical thinking skills necessary in the heat treating industry. Understanding the use of the proper equipment and materials for processing steel are crucial to obtaining the correct results.

Committed to Completion and Timely Delivery

The company isn’t afraid to tackle any job – from small runs, right on up through the most demanding of tasks at large volumes – running their operation 24 hours a day – 5 days a week. They regularly schedule and run three loads of nitriding per week – to meet customer demand and deadlines. They also process daily runs of stainless and tool steels with the added ability to perform precipitation hardening grades of stainless steel in length up to 12 feet.

County Heat Treat offers pickup and delivery service within Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island, as well as southern NH and VT.  They primarily service the New England area; however, their reputation has a full swinging domestic reach, as they have provided customer service from coast-to-coast, establishing loyal customer relationships throughout the entirety of the country.
